I mentioned in the class how I wish you all would read writings of History Prof. Dr. Arjo J. Vanderjagt from University of Groningen, publish his ideas and photos in Flickr by the name of Rana Pipien. His site has full of botanical discovery stories.

Mass Blooming of Penaga Lilin

To those whose are familiar with the roads around Fakulti Kejuruteraan, you may notice that the rows of trees in the area is in full bloom of sweet smelling white flowers with bright yellow stamens. This phenomenon of mass blooming is once a year phenomenon and would be best if you can capture this event for the record.

The penaga lilin, or Mesua ferrea is a member of Clusiaceae or better known with traditional family name Guttiferae, the a cousin of mangis and kecupu. Like their cousins, these flowers will open early in the morning and drop out by late morning. So you better wake up early.

The result is out and posted in the board in front of my Biology Program Head room. Please check if you have time. The result was presented top-down (A to C-).

Additional Info:
The result is better than last year probably due to the use of Flickr.
But some did very poorly. And, surprise, surprise... The top 6 students are ALL from Pendidikan group. The weighted average for all botany student is only 63 as compared to pendidikan (66).

FAVES

I notice that nobody from our class has fav any of my photos. It is impossible that none of 40 students in the class like to keep any of my photos. Alas, more likely that you do not know what Faves are. Fav are photos that you like very much (favorites, fav) and once you mark it as your fav than it will appear in you faves list (in the menu under YOU scroll). The best is that the owner of the photo will be notified when it was faved. So you will know who think which photo they like. And I know which photo YOU like (which mean which photo you have seen). You can check it in comments section everytime you log on.

When I put a grade on you photos, I will mark some photos from you that I like. The amount of your photos that I mark as faves will tell you how much the value of your photos in my eyes (and your grade for quality of collection/photos (25 species x 5 marks each set). For each photo that I mark as faves would be a valuable photos and I want all of you to send me a copy of the originals in cd or pendrive.

So start faving my photos and be rewarded (the best 150 photos from my sets are in the TOP 150 PHOTOS under interestingness.

Nor Azzua Mhd Omar menghantag flickrmail kepada saya dengan soalan yang sangat baik dan saya rasa jawapan saya kepada beliau patut dikongsi disini. Soalan beliau berbunyi begini:

"Saya nak tanya soalan pasal famili kedondong. Dari note prof, kedondong (berada) dalam Famili Burseraceae. Tapi dalam buku 1001 Garden plants ia (berada) dalam Famili Anacardiaceae. Apa Famili sebenarnya prof."

Sebenarnya bagi Burseraceae, kayunya selalu dipanggil kedondong atau Kijai untuk genus Santiria; tapi memanglah Kedondong juga digunakan untuk Spondias (Anacardiaceae) yang ditunjukkan dalam buku 1001 tersebut. Ini adalah contoh yang sangat tepat bagi homonimy dan synonimy yang telah kita bincang dalam kelas. Nama kedondong boleh dimaksudkan kepada 2 spesies yang berbeza (homonim) dan Santiria mempunyai 2 nama (sinonim)!

Saya sudah melawat beberapa laman dari pelajar, dan alangkah terkejutnya bila saya dapati ada pelajar yang meletakkan hanya 4 gambar saja dalam Flickr mereka ! Tarikh akhir telah berlalu (26 Feb 2008) dan sekarang masa untuk mencari nama. Wrong names of Kesidang

Liza alerted me on several id which was wrong in my Flickr. It is normal and I thank her for her dilligence. The most important name change is in the Kesidang or Tikar Seladang. The name I gave you in the class and the family is no longer valid (it was refered to a different plant altogether). Please see my notes on those photos especially on the family names adopted for the species.

Links to Your Photo Site

The links STAB2132 students are now updated (based on your entry in the class/quiz) and I want everybody check yours and your friend's link. Those with broken links are bad, and I have taken out half of your quiz marks.

Some of you have posted (majority don't have a photo yet) very good photos but no name on it yet. Some posted other people's photos and this is not allowed, illegal and your flickr account can be taken out offline by Yahoo. If you like other people's photo you can FAV them. You can fav all photos in my collection if you like ;-). You can get the latest names in my collection.

Please do not mixed up your photos with personal pictures that has nothing to do with the class. One way to avoid this is by setting up a special SET and put all you photos in the SET (you may call them Flora, Flower, or Botany. And please limit not more that 3 BEST photos for every species. Others can be placed in outside the SET. If you put blurred photos or wrong names I will deduct your points

Take a look at my collections, especially the Flora sets, or the interestingness. Please put your comments, so that I know you were there. This will help me in knowing your interest, and interested in botany.

I prefer photos with localities (where do you photograph the flower?). I also want all of you to standardize you format, like I did for my photo (The local name in title and species and family in the notes. The examples of the format I want you to follow is here, here, here, and here:

Kuiz #2

There will be another quiz this coming monday, in the class. It will be from my latest photos (as of now, later in the day I will post more) in my Flickr. If you have not seen it, then best of lucks.
In the kuiz, I will also ask for your Flickr address. Please note it down, and bring it to the class. I bold it for you in case you can't read small prints. No excuses will be entertained, and top of the list (yang tak mahu di dengar) is that you don't have the Internet or the lines are slow. I told you that there are solutions to it.

The 1001 book will be here on Friday night. You have to form 8 study group (4 from science and 4 from Ed) and each group will get 1 copy and you have to decide who will pay, i.e. the kepala or the entire group share it and where the book to be put. Another 40 books will be brought in next month.

Remember these ugly fruits I brought in to the classroom on Mon ? Well I took some photos of it, and I am very proud of the result. Go and check the Flickr to see if anyone has these kind of pictures. I am serious !. Glad that next year we don't have to borrow other people photo for gymnosperm fruit anymore.

BTW anyone can give me the fruit of Gnetum? If find them anywhere please take it to my room.

So far only two students have their Flickr site: Khadijah and Kalyanee. Both are now listed in our Dendron Et Cetera (on right, scroll down below From MSc Students and above Blog Archive. The list will as I know many other students will have their site soon. Please let me know by email if you have one (copy the url address).

Some students complained that internet lines are slow in Kolej. You can use several computers in the Rafflesia Lab (4th Floor) with decent internet line after office hrs. You have to arrange access with Mat Ros or Nery in the lab.

Selepas memikir panjang perkara ini, saya merasakan mungkin ada masalah jika kita membenarkan pelajar memilih famili tertentu untuk projek mereka. Ada beberapa family yg sangat besar dan ada pula famili yang hanya mempunyai beberapa spesies saja. Oleh yang demikian saya telah mengambil keputusan bahawa TIDAK ADA pemilihan famili akan dibenarkan dan semua pelajar boleh mengambil apa saja gambar tumbuhan dari mana-mana famili tetapi jumlah MINIMUM bagi SETIAP pelajar adalah 25 spesies tumbuhan di sekitar kampus, BBB, Kajang dan dari kawasan kerjalapngan nanti (Cameron Highland?).

Setiap spesies satu set gambar hendaklah disediakan yg terdiri dari habit keseluruhan, bunga dan buah. Ia mestilah dinamakan dengan betul (spesies, famili dan nama tempatan) dan bernota (asal-usul, kegunaan etc. etc.). Semua gambar hendaklah dihantar kepada FLICKR (semua pelajar mesti mempunyai akaun sendiri dan tapak Flickr sendiri) dan alamat Flickr mestilah didaftarkan kepada saya atau ketua-ketua kelas. Ia akan disenaraikan di dalam blog ini supaya boleh dilihat oleh semua pelajar dan dikomen kalau salah penamaan.

Markah akan diberikan berdasarkan mutu gambar, penamaan dan nilai koleksi (keunikan). Gambar tambahan jika melebihi 25 set akan diberikan bonus.
Semua pertanyaan boleh diajukan kepada saya di dalam kelas semua pelajar dikehendaki memulakan aktiviti sekarang.

What Plant Is This?

The key to botanical excellence is by being curious on plants, flowers, trees, shrubs etc.. etc... in your surrounding. Whenever you see plant, you must ask what it is. Many people have seen this plant in my room but only few cared to ask.

I think I have written about this "fat boy" a.k.a "zz plant" in my blog somewhere. Go check lah. Anyone can tell if this is gymnosperm or angiosperm? Is this dinosour plant? What family is this plant from? And the species name? I am sure many of you know that this plant is famous among chinese, it is suppose to bring you all the good luck you need.

Tell me the link to my blog, or my student's blog and the name. You will never know if I ask about this again, later.

Sudah lama saya tidak ke udara!

bagi pelajar yg sedang bercuti, selamat bercuti, tetapi jangan terkejut kalau ramai yang kena mengulang kursus ftb, atau kena ambil kursus lain bagi peljr pendidkan
Sebabnya adalah mutu hantaran spesimen yang sangat buruk. Tidak pernah seumur hidup saya menjadi pensyarah taksonomi mutu spesimen yng dihantar seburuk ini. Saya dan kakitangan herbarium semua jatuh sakit selepas melihat "spesimen" yg anda hantar. Byk spesimen yang berkulat, ada yng dihantar seperti tidak pernah dimasukkan dalam oven. Ada yng gunakan suratkhabar yng telah menjadi kuning emas. Spora kulat merata, seluar dan baju saya menjadi hitam. Dan mcam-macam lagi. Ada kumpulan yang menhantar spesimen yang tumbuh di celah syratkhabar! Dia mengeluarkan pucuk !

Oleh yang demikian, spesimen yng seperti ini tak diberi markah. kalau adapun, hanya 0.25 per spsimn, per 3. Byk kumpulan yang menhangtar spesimen bukan dari kumpulan tumbuhan yng mereka sign-up. Buat Arecidae, hantar keladi! Ada kumpulan yng menhantar spesimen yg sangat sedikit, bayangkan berapa sen kami boleh bagi.

Dan yg paling menyedihkan label dibuat tidak jelas dan lengkap. Ada yg tulis lokaliti hanya Kelantan, atau Perlis. Byk juga yang ditulis dikekitar UKM. Lokaliti mestilah spesifik, samapai ke no rumah. kalau di Kelantan, nak cari dimana. Perlis? tahukah anda berapa besar kws yg diliputi.

Cuba anda kira sendiri markah yg and akan dapat. Hantar spesimen sebanyak 20, setiap spesimen mendapat average 0.5. Markahnya 20 x 0.5/150 = ?
Kalau saya ambil 30%, apakah gred anda?

For those who are yet to check their result, please do so in my portal. The result is in the course section. Here is what I wrote as a preamble to the listing:

Presented below are the result of the take home exam for STAB2132 on several aspects of Rafflesia. I have tried to be very very lenient and gave what I thought the best you deserve. But if you have any problem with this decision please come and see me, with appointment. If you want to appeal please WRITE in and state your reasons why do you think you should get higher mark. But read the reasons below first.

These are some grave mistakes or reasons on why students were penalised.
1. Taken directly from internet. In fact, by rule, these students can be referred to the Chancelory and you will be kicked out of the university. Lecturers were already been instructed to refer such cases to higher ups, in writing.

SO CONSIDER YOU ARE LUCKY for a given mark, walaupun satu markah !

2. Didn't know that fact, especially when the facts are already been known. There are things that was told in the class, or discussed in the class in my lecture. but students just simply copy it from the Net or Jamili's book. This is especially true to the question no 2 (classification). There are only 3 genera of Rafflesiaceae now recognised in the family ! So why are you talking nonsense about Bdallophyton Hydnora etc etc

3. There students who are not sure what is the family. When I asked to ellaborate on the family Rafflesiaceae, some students still talking about the genus Rafflesia

4. Some students doesn't understand the question, or refuse to read the question. Regardless of how long you write, that doesn't count if you merapu on other things

SPECIAL NOTES TO STUDENTS THAT MISSED THE DATELINE

You can now send in your assignment in a CD directly to me and an official letter of appeal. If you did sent in, you must have a proof. Otherwise just an appeal, asking for consideration after admitting your mistake. Bear in mind that the orginal dateline was 2 weeks earlier than the actual closure of the account. Please write in Malay.

Many people came or email me regarding my research project. You can check my previous student projects listed in "Who Am I" in my portal(http://kms.drkms.com/). I am allowed only limited number of students. So please email me you name, cgpa/pngk and other background.

But, if you are serious and want to be my student, these are the some points for consideration:

You must be hard working, because my tolerance level to lazy peoples is very low
You do not have to be very smart, but you must work like smart peoples
High IQ is not an obsolute requirement, but must be genetically inclined
No couples are allowed in my lab - you have to choose between Rafflesia or your boyfreund/girlfreund.
You must agree not to steal, either my data, my books, or my daughter !
Sites doesn't matter; what important is this - you cannot say that your mother doesn't like going to the bushes. No one in my lab has died from tiger attack yet.
Our member like leeches, do you ? Hey they can be a good substitute for mee goreng
All my students are either an A student or die from the 5th floor fall
Never lie to Pakdin ! He visits all sites of your interest

Midsem Take Home Submission

I don't like seeing some of the submission that has many mistakes. Some students doesn't even know the official name of UKM, which is never as NUM. It was only in the motto, not the name. Some doesn't even know how to address the lecturers. Some have very unprofessional names in the address, I don't care you are cute or ugly. You should have official email address, and your sms buddy ones

Midsem Take Home Exam

As announced in the class on Fri, all students of STAB 2132 must answer the following questions electronically and send it to me at the following address: kms@drkms.com. The compiled list of submissions will be posted in my new Pakdin Personal portal. The answer must be in english. Some informations can be obtained from the Net but you must filter it, because not all info in the internet is correct. Many informations are already been published in the Rafflesia-in-Bloom, RRMT or Dendron. PDF files of the main information (in Malay) were already deposited in my portal. Please check the document section.

Students must write in their own word, no cut and paste is allowed. If you are cought copying directly from others or internet will be asked to explain and be referred to the Dean/Cancellory for disciplinary action.

Here is the 4 questions:

1. What is Rafflesia and why is it biologically interesting. Describe the morphology of Rafflesia
2. Explain the basic clasification of Rafflesiaceae
3. How many species of Rafflesia are there in Malaysia?. Write the taxonomy of Rafflesia of Malaysia (you can use the format of Jamili's book)

The correct terminology for fig, which the fruit of Ficus is syconium. It is derived from a specially adapted type of inflorescence (structural arrangement of flowers). What is commonly called the "fruit" of a fig is actually a specialized structure- or accessory fruit- called a syconium: an involuted (nearly closed) receptacle with many small flowers arranged on the inner surface. Thus the actual flowers of the fig are unseen unless the fig is cut open. The syconium often has a bulbous shape with a small opening (the ostiole) at the distal end that allows access by pollinators. The flowers are pollinated by very small wasps that crawl through the opening in search of a suitable place to reproduce (lay eggs). Without this pollinator service fig trees cannot reproduce by seed. In turn, the flowers provide a safe haven and nourishment for the next generation of wasps. Technically, a fig fruit would be one of many mature, seed-bearing flowers found inside one fig.

Concensus and recent analyses concur in placing the monotypic Amborella as the sister to all other extant angiosperms. Amborella trichopoda, endemic to cloud forests of New Caledonia, was described in the mid-nineteenth century by Baillon (1869) and has since been classified with various groups of basal angiosperms and was included within Laurales by the great Cronquist (1981) although it was disputed in molecular studies.

Forgot to mention in the class that my favorite fruit punch inIndonesia is "Advokat" which is made of avocado juice. The avocado is Persea americana, a member of Lauraceae !
Economic use of Lauraceae is evidently is not just Cinnamon.

Magnolia pumila (Blume) Andrews

This a photo of recent bloom in my garden. My wife bought the plant from one nursery in Kajang, brought home last year. I took me sometime to check name of this plant. I was told Agrolink (MOA) call it Magnolia coco PC and IPNI reports that Magnolia coco DC, not PC is actually a synonym of Magnolia pumila (Blume) Andrews. The basonym is Talauma pumila, which is often cited in the internet as well.
